WWW Wednesday – 6th July 2016

I’ve seen WWW Wednesday floating around quite a few other book blogs, so I thought I’d give it a go. I usually do a Currently Reading post every so often, but I don’t always have time for it, or enough to say for a full post, so this might be a better way of tidying everything up. It is hosted by Sam over at Taking on a World of Words, so go and have a look at everyone else is reading.

The premise of the post is quite simple – answer the three Ws:

1. What are you currently reading?
2. What did you recently finish reading?
3. What do you think you’ll read next?

What are you currently reading?

I have just started my ARC of Everything Love Is by Claire King. Her debut novel, The Night Rainbow, has been on my TBR list for a really long time, but I’ve struggled to find a copy, other than on Amazon where the price is slightly higher than I would normally pay for a book. I was very excited, therefore, when Everything Love Is popped up on NetGalley, and was lucky enough to be sent a ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Interestingly, Claire King is a local author to me. She’s from the same town, and I’m surprised I hadn’t heard of her before a couple of months ago. I’m even more surprised, because her writing is stunning. I’m only around 50 pages in so far, but her descriptions and imagery are charming. I love her use of colours, such as ‘apricot’ and ‘persimmon’, rather than just orange. I can tell already that a lot of care and attention went into each sentence and I love it. Also, can we all just stop and appreciate how pretty the cover is?

Having said that, however, I am very, very confused. If the prose wasn’t so beautiful, I would have abandoned this book 20 pages ago. I have absolutely no idea what is going on, but I feel like it will soon become clear. I don’t think I’m supposed to know what’s going on yet. I have heard that it really picks up after the 100 page mark, so hopefully there’s not long to go before I start racing through it.

What did you recently finish reading?

I’m going to include two books here, because I read them both very quickly over the weekend. The first is The Accident by C. L. Taylor. I read her latest novel, The Missing, a few weeks ago and wasn’t too impressed. If I hadn’t received all three of her novels for my birthday, I wouldn’t have bothered buying the others, but as I did, I decided to give her another go. Wow, I was wrong. I should have read The Accident first. This was her debut novel under the C. L. Taylor guise, having previously written chic-lit under the name Cally Taylor. I was so, so impressed. It’s been so long since I read a thriller that actually scared me, and this did just that. The last few chapters had me wanting to put it down, whilst not being able to stop turning the pages. Very gripping and highly recommended. Review coming soon!

The second book I read this weekend was an ARC of Tell Us Something True by Dana Reinhardt, won through Goodreads Giveaways. I don’t normally read YA fiction, but after reading so many thrillers recently, it was just what I needed to cleanse the palate, if you will! Despite me having apprehensions towards YA in general (something a blame entirely on my deep hatred of anything John Green, but we’ll save that for another day), I really enjoyed this book. It was a neat 200 pages, being easy to finish in a few hours, which was all I needed. I wouldn’t have liked to drag it out any longer than that, but it did what I needed it to do, and it put a smile on my face. Again, look out for my review, coming soon.

What do you think you’ll read next? 

I think I’ll possibly be ready for another thriller. I have so many books under my bed, waiting to be read, but I’ll probably read either The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins, or Disclaimer by Renee Knight. I’m probably the only person on the planet who hasn’t read The Girl on the Train yet, but I don’t like reading hardback books, so I waited for the paperback. Now that I have it, I’m nervous about reading it, just in case it doesn’t live up to the hype and I’m disappointed. Disclaimer is one that I bought under recommendation from a member of staff in Waterstones. He assured me it’s very twisty and gripping, yet it does have some mixed reviews on Goodreads, so I’m not sure. It isn’t very long though so even if I don’t like it, it shouldn’t be too difficult to finish.

I’ve also got a long list of non-thrillers that are waiting to be read, but I am trying my best to alternate genres. I’ll probably have changed my mind by the time I’ve finished Everything Love Is, but we’ll see.
