WWW Wednesday – 27th July 2016

The premise of the post is quite simple – answer the three Ws:

  1. What are you currently reading?
  2. What did you recently finish reading?
  3. What do you think you’ll read next?

What are you currently reading?

I am currently around half way through A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness. It’s not the sort of thing I’d normally read, but I was assured by my bestie Juliet (Not Capulet) that I would enjoy it, and I am. I was initially a bit worried by the synopsis, as I don’t like fantasy as a general rule (apart from Harry Potter, of course!), but I don’t think it is fantasy really. At least, not in the normal sense of the word. It reads like a children’s book. Although of course it is a children’s book, it has the fairy-tale elements of a book for much younger children, with an intelligence in the language that brings it back up to the correct reading age. There’s something very comforting and reminiscent in this, and I’ll be interested to see how this all relates to the plot as it progresses.

What did you recently finish reading?

I had hoped to have squeezed in two books this week, but I didn’t quite manage it. The majority of the week was taken up by Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty, which dragged a lot more than I wanted it to. You can see my full rant in my review here, but I’ll just say in brief, that it made me angry. The plot was fine, but the characters were insultingly terrible.

What do you think you’ll read next?

I change my mind so often, but I think the next book I’ll read is I Am The Messanger by Markus Zusak. The Book Thief is my absolute favourite book of all time, and I really don’t know why it’s taken me so long to get my hands on another Markus Zusak book. I’m hoping the language will be equally beautiful, and I will fall in love with this book as I did The Book Thief.

Following that, I think I’ll read The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah, as I said I would last week. I’m still in the mood for some historical fiction, so I am really excited to read this. It will also be the highest average rated book on Goodreads that I have read (other than Harry Potter), so I have very high expectations.

    I absolutely love A Monster Calls. It has that fantastic modern fairytale quality to it and the descriptions and emotions are just incredible. I got all excited during the week when I spotted they’ve released (or are releasing) a special edition. It looks absolutely stunning but I’m trying to resist 🙂

    If you do continue to enjoy I’d recommend the Knife of Never Letting Go. It’s sci fi but don’t let that put you off as it’s a really good and imaginative story (like all of his other books).

    I almost picked up A Monster Calls the other day, but then I didn’t. I keep hearing good things, so I’ll have to soon.
    How coincidental that you have I Am The Messenger lined up. Now that I’ve discovered the beauty of the Book Thief, I’ll be looking to get my hands on another Zusak novel too!

    I enjoyed reading Big Little Lies, but in a very shallow way. When I think about it, a lot of characters were kind of weak or caricaturish, though I was a little more sympathetic toward Madeline. Thank you for linking to your review and making me consider it in a different light 🙂 I’ve heard good things about The Nightingale and I hope you like it loads better than Big Little Lies.

    I’m so glad you’re enjoying A Monster Calls! I don’t think I’ve cried that much since Dobby died. Also I don’t usually enjoy historical fiction but The Nightingale’s cover is beautiful, so I might have to pinch it off you on that basis alone!

    ‘I Am the Messenger’ is very different from ‘The Book Thief.’ I would never have thought they were by the same writer. Zusak likes to play with narration and he’s done that a bit in this book as well. I hope you’re able to enjoy it. Happy reading and thanks for participating in WWW Wednesday!

    I hope that you will enjoy I am a Messenger.The Book Thief is one of my favourites too and I got to read I am a Messenger last month and absolutely loved it.Enjoy your current and next reads!
